Allergology is the medical specialty that enables us to recognise, diagnose and treat various adverse reactions caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system to substances, normally innocuous, that it wrongly identifies as harmful, Inhaling, touching or consuming these substances provokes allergic reactions that frequently manifest themselves through skin or respiratory conditions.

Our immune system produces a grand quantity of antibodies known as immunoglobulin E (IgE) that act directly on the allergens. In this process the body releases or produces inflammatory chemicals such as histamines, cytokines or leukotrienes. Therefore certain treatments are based on habituating the body. This is known as desensitization.

An allergic reaction can occur in any part of the body, skin, eyes, stomach lining, nose, sinuses, throat and lungs. The symptoms that most frequently indicate an allergy are:

-Rhinorrhoea (runny nose)

-Reddening and irritation of the eyes

-Irritated, itchy skin, or skin outbreak

-Itchy nose, throat or palate

-Breathing difficulties, cough or wheezing

Should you be experiencing any of these symptoms it is advisable that you consult a specialist who can diagnose if you have an allergy and who can treat you accordingly.
